If you want to hike at night, you need a good headlamp {Petzl Tactikka is my personal choice) and a small, bright flashlight to spot check your surroundings. Trust me, you will get freaked out when your headlight shows glowing eyes looking at you but does not throw enough light to see what it is. Most likely a deer, but you want to know for sure.
This is the best small flashlight for that purpose that I have found so far.
PROS:
Small.
Bright.
Good color rendition.
Uses standard AAA batteries (3)
CONS:
No lanyard, and no good way to attach a string to it. I resorted to a hose clamp to attach a cord to it, so I could attach it to the shoulder strap of my backpack. Always right there if I need it.
No momentary switch, just on and off.
No red light. My headlight has a red light filter, so no big deal for me.
It only has one setting, full. This is what I want, but for some uses it might be nice to have a low setting.
